Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes for unknown reasons. The body stops producing insulin (a hormone that is necessary for living). A Type 1 Diabetic not only has to calculate the carbs they take in but also calculate the amount of insulin they need to inject themselves with. There are just too many extra factors that affect blood sugar making it impossible to mimic a working pancreas. Managing T1D (Type 1 Diabetes) is a never ending roller coaster that can take a toll on a person not only physically, mentally, but financially as well.
1 in 4 people rationed insulin because they could not afford it.
Though there is no cure, modern medical advances do make managing T1D easier with Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) and insulin pumps. as great as these devices are, in truth, they are just expensive band-aids.
When the blood sugar is high, a T1D can feel “out of it”, crabby, thirsty, and develop headaches, and will need extra insulin to bring it back down.
When the blood sugar is low, they can feel shaky, confused, frustrated, uncoordinated, and are at risk of losing consciousness.
