What is a “Low Snack” & My Top 5 Favorites

For those unfamiliar, a “Low Snack” is a snack that someone with Type 1 Diabetes keeps on hand to treat low blood sugar quickly. It’s their go-to snack for managing low blood sugar levels, because let’s face it, glucose tablets are yucky and taste like chalk. Each person has their favorite low snack, and today, I will share my top 5 favorites from years of living with T1D.

#5. Grape Juicy Juice

One significant advantage of juice is its quick absorption since there’s no chewing involved. You can also drink it half-asleep, making it easy to treat a low and quickly go back to sleep. However, finding the small juice boxes can be challenging, and piercing the straw during a shaky low can be difficult. Explosions in your purse are not fun, but I have found that placing the juice box in a soap bar travel container can help remedy this problem. If you are interested in buying these Juice boxes in Bulk, you can click on the link below to order them on Amazon.

#4. Sweet Tarts

Sweet Tarts offer several benefits for treating lows. They are easy to carry, and one roll of Sweet Tarts can treat multiple lows. Additionally, they allow for inconspicuous consumption when you need to be quiet and discreet. I’ve provided an amazon link below, if you are interested in buying Sweet Tarts in bulk.

#3. Smarties

Similar to Sweet Tarts, Smarties are convenient to carry, but their wrapper may be less discreet. Also, it takes 3 or more rolls to treat one low. Despite this, they come in large bags at an affordable price, making them a great choice for managing lows. If Smarties are your thing, I’ve provided another Amazon link below.

#2. Nerd Clusters

While Nerd Clusters are delicious, their large resealable packaging can be challenging to carry at all times. Another reason they are not number 1 on my list, is that they are so good, I can easily over-treat my lows and inadvertently raise my blood sugar. Click the link below to buy a bag from Amazon.

#1. Funables : Paw Patrol Fruit Snacks

Yes, you heard that right, Paw Patrol Fruit Snacks are at the top of my list for several reasons. The individual packaging makes them easy to carry around and transport. They are easy to chew quickly for immediate low treatments. Additionally, having a stockpile of Paw Patrol Fruit Snacks makes me the cool aunt, carrying around my nieces and nephews’ favorite characters. If Paw Patrol isn’t a favorite to the little ones in your life, Funables have many other fun characters to choose from. Click the Amazon link below to order your Fruit Snacks today. The link also gives you the options for “Baby Shark”, “Barbie”, “Mixed Berry”, and “Super Mario”.

Conclusion:

These are just a few of my favorite low snacks that I’ve enjoyed over the years. I hope this list inspires you to explore and try new “Low Snacks” as everyone’s preferences and reactions to Type 1 can vary. Discovering what works best for you in treating lows is a personal journey, and experimentation can lead to finding the most effective solutions for your unique needs.
